At the Heart of the Waterford Greenway
A Treat for the Soul

At the heart of the Waterford Greenway and County Waterford’s primary village, lies a true treat for the soul — Coach House Coffee. Nestled within the beautifully restored historic Famine Workhouse development in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford, our café is a place to pause, refuel, and reconnect.

The village of Kilmacthomas sits at the midway point of the Waterford Greenway, on the banks of the River Mahon in the aptly named Mahon Valley. In the early 1870s, the arrival of the Waterford to Mallow railway marked a turning point for the village, bringing the influence of the Industrial Revolution to this rural heartland. From this era emerged Kilmacthomas’ crowning achievement — the iconic eight-arch curved stone viaduct spanning the Mahon River. These powerful industrial and architectural influences have directly inspired the distinctive design and character of Coach House Coffee today.

Although passenger rail services ceased in the late 1960s, the line continued to serve industry for decades before eventually falling into disrepair — until its remarkable rebirth. Following significant investment, 46km of the former railway line has been transformed into the Waterford Greenway, a world-class walking and cycling route showcasing the very best of County Waterford.

From lush green landscapes and the Comeragh Mountains to a breathtaking coastline, historic bridges and atmospheric tunnels, the Greenway reveals Waterford’s inner beauty — and its heart lies right here in Kilmacthomas, at the 23km centre point. Park up at the Workhouse public car park, step directly onto the Greenway, and head east towards Waterford City or west towards the stunning coastal scenery of Clonea and Dungarvan.
Whether you’re cycling, walking, exploring local history, or simply seeking great coffee in a unique setting, Coach House Coffee in Kilmacthomas is your perfect stop along the journey.
